Announcing the "They Remade What?!" Blogathon

I've finally decided to host my first blogathon. The subject? Remakes. That's right. Here is your chance to compare and contrast the original with the remake. The dates for this blogathon run from October 9 - 11 (Friday through Saturday). Also, I will not be assigning days so feel free to post anytime during the blogathon.
Last night after I posted this I was so excited that I dreamed I was getting all these responses but everyone was picking foreign films and no one was linking their blog! And I had to make each participant their own banner. Needless to say I was a little worn out when I woke up :)
The rules:

1. Your original movie can be from the silent period up until 1970. The remake of course can be all the way up until the present. Please make sure you have actually watched both (or all) films.

2. Make sure you leave a link to your blog in the comments when claiming your films.

3. As there have been so many remakes throughout Hollywood history, I ask that there be no duplicates.

4. Please include in your post which version you saw first and if that influenced which one you liked better.

5. Try and stay away from remakes that are based on the original book rather than another movie; for example, film versions of The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett.

6. Finally, grab one of these banners to display on your blog and help spread the word!!!

Here's a list of movies that have been remade that I know of. It is by no means complete - I'm sure there are many more that I've missed. Click here to see a list of remakes on Wikipedia.

  1. YAY. Thanks for the invite Phyllis. May I write about "Titanic" ( 1953 ) and "Titanic" ( 1997 )? This finally gives me the opportunity to compare both versions. I've always been wanting to write about it. Let me know if that works?

  5. I just gotta do the God-awful 1976 KING KONG remake with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange. (Some folks actually liked the 2005 version, so I'll leave that for someone else.) May I? http://moviemovieblogblog.wordpress.com

  6. I just found your blog and am thrilled you're doing this blogathon! It's a terrific opportunity to write about such intriguing and, let's be honest, somewhat terrible remakes!

My Blog is Musings of an Introvert.

If I can claim more than 1 set of films I'd like to claim:

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
All of the Little Miss Marker/Sorrowful Jones films

If I can only claim one set, then I'm going with Sorrowful Jones. :)

    3. And there was a 1957 ripoff/remake called CAT GIRL--which IMDb has cleverly linked to a 2010 film of the same title.

  15. Hi Phyl. When I signed up I forgot to mention "A Night To Remeber" which is another version of the Titanic, so could you add me to the roster for: Titanic 1953, A Night To Remember 1958, and Titanic 1997? In that order? Thanks

  16. I'd love to join in and write about The Big Sleep (1946 with Bogart & 1978 with Mitchum)

    1. Great! I'll be interested to know if the remake makes more sense than the original ;)

      Delete
    2. So why is THE MALTESE FALCON ruled out and THE BIG SLEEP, THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME or THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY ruled in?

      Delete
    3. I ruled out The Maltese Falcon because each movie that was made of it went back to the book as their original source rather than the previous movie. Also it is the most famous. Other examples I wouldn't accept would be Little Women and Sherlock Holmes. I didn't specifically rule out all "book" movies, that would mean most of them. Just the ones that are the most famous and therefore more people have read them.

      Delete
    4. THE BIG SLEEP is fully as famous, and as much Gone Back To, as THE MALTESE FALCON, is what I suggest here. The two second-most famous/best-selling novels by two extremely comparable writers...Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. I'll drop this now, but it seems strange to me. (THE THIN MAN outsold FALCON for DH, THE LONG GOODBYE might just've squeaked by SLEEP for Chandler.

  17. Hi! Could you give me the two versions of Imitation of Life?
I'm Le from the blog Critica Retro

  18. I'd like to cover the three Hollywood adaptations of The Most Dangerous Game: The Most Dangerous Game (1932), A Game of Death (1945), and Run for the Sun (1956).

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh jeesh, the comments thing cut my comment off! I meant to add that each version takes a lot from the one which came before it and are all rather distant from the original short story anyway, so I hope it's not a violation of rule number five.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah that will be fine. I just wanted to stay away from ones like "Little Woman", the more famous books.

    2. THE BIG SLEEP and "the Most Dangerous Game" and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" are Hugely famous works of fiction...

    4. Not long enough for a book by itself. It's true it isn't as famous as it once was, but it was widely reprinted in the '60s and '70s and occasionally since, after first publication in PLAYBOY, back when that magazine was still a huge-seller...

  25. Hi Phyl,

    Great idea for a blogathon.

I'd like to do Frank Capra's remake of his own film - Lady for a Day (1933) and Pocketful of Miracles (1961) if that is OK with you!

  27. I've already asked for the 1976 KING KONG remake, but there's a remake so obvious, I can't believe I overlooked it. In 1973, Universal remade DOUBLE INDEMNITY for TV, starring Richard Crenna in a version updated to the 1970's. It's even available for free viewing on YouTube? May I PLEASE take a shot at this one?
